What to focus on in Chinese
Lexical tones
Pitch patterns can distinguish meaning, and the tone systems differ between Mandarin and Cantonese. Follow the reference for the variety selected in the game.
Syllable shape
Work on the beginning, vowel, and ending of a difficult syllable in order. A clear syllable gives its tone a stable shape to sit on.
Tones in context
A citation-form tone is only the beginning: neighbouring syllables affect how a phrase is realised. Sentence practice keeps those transitions in their real context.
Practice library
Choose Simplified Mandarin, Taiwan Mandarin, or Hong Kong Cantonese. Each library has 300 CEFR-graded sentences and its own regional reference voice.
900 sentences · A1–C2
A useful practice routine
- Choose one regional library and copy that reference consistently during a session.
- Listen for both the direction and the relative height of each tone movement.
- Practise a difficult two- or three-syllable group before returning to the full sentence.
