What to focus on in Italian

Double consonants

Italian distinguishes single and double consonants by duration. Give a written double consonant enough closure or hold time to keep the contrast audible.

Open and clear vowels

Italian vowels remain important in unstressed syllables. Avoid reducing them so far that the syllable loses its recognisable shape.

Stress and flow

Word stress is not always obvious from spelling. Reference audio shows which syllable carries prominence and how it joins the surrounding phrase.

Practice library

The Italian library contains 300 sentences across CEFR levels A1 to C2, with native Italian reference audio for every sentence.

A useful practice routine

  • Contrast a single and doubled consonant by changing duration, not loudness.
  • Keep unstressed vowels present while speaking at a comfortable pace.
  • Repeat the complete phrase after isolating a difficult word so the rhythm stays natural.
