French u vs ou: hear and practise the difference
The vowels in tu and vous are different. Both use rounded lips, so looking only at your lips will not explain the contrast. Use these three A1 sentences from the France French library to compare the sounds in tu, rue, vous and du.
listen to the sentences ↓What changes between u and ou?
For u, as in tu, keep your tongue high towards the front of your mouth with rounded lips. For ou, as in vous, keep the lips rounded while moving the tongue further back. The ou sound is closer to the English vowel in “zoo”; using it for both French vowels loses the contrast.
One starting cue is to say an ee-like vowel, keep that tongue position, and round your lips. Compare the result with tu in the first recording. Then alternate tu and vous, attending to the vowel rather than the different consonants. Use small, comfortable changes in tongue position.
Listen to the vowel inside the word
In the first sentence, tu and rue both contain the front rounded vowel. In the second, vous contains the back rounded vowel. The third puts vous and du in the same question, so you can compare the two without switching recordings. These are complete-sentence exercises, not minimal pairs.
Listen before reading aloud, then repeat the named word and put it back into the sentence. The goal is a clear audible contrast. A word score can help you choose what to replay, but it does not by itself establish which vowel you produced.

A short routine to repeat tomorrow
- Play the first two sentences and identify tu and vous by ear before speaking.
- Record the third sentence. Replay your voice alongside the reference and focus on vous and du.
- Change one detail of tongue position, then record the whole question again. Compare the sound as well as the word scores.
How to read the feedback
Word scores help you choose what to replay. They are automatic measurements, not a certificate of fluency or proof that a particular sound is correct. Listen to your recording as well as the reference; if a sound could not be measured, the tool leaves it unscored.
